Hey Oppo,

I’m in first year university here in BC, Canada and am planning to get a new car next year. I’m currently living on campus at my university in Kelowna, but will be living off campus next year and will need a car to commute. I currently have a 95' corolla at home, although my parents want me to get something a bit newer, safer and more efficient (it has a 3 speed auto, I think 3rd is 1:1). I’ve been browsing local craigslist for a while now and have found some models that interest me, such as the 99-06 celica gt, newest gen prelude, integras, focus zx3/zx5. My budget is about 5 grand and my only real requirements are the price, a manual transmission and not too inefficient (6s are ok, v8s likely aren’t).

Any suggestions, or comments on the models I’ve mentioned would be appreciated

Otherwise, here’s some with manuals in your area.

An MX-3

Here’s an E39 that needs some work:

A diesel Jetta, these things run forever.

If you don’t mind older, a Volvo:

Celicas will be the most plentiful and probably the most reliable. I mean I had very few issues with my Integra that were unrelated to age, but for you an integra would be as old or older than your Corolla most likely...

I guess I should have also put RSX in there too.

Your listed cars are good starting points. Don’t forget Mazda3 (same platform as the later Focus), later Tiburon, Suzuki SX4 and Kizashi, Mazda MX-6 and MX-3 (but might be older than you want), Focus SVT, Contour SVT, Lincoln LS V6, etc. The Celica is very similar to the Corolla, for better or for worse, much like the RSX/Integra/Prelude is similar to the Civic.

I’ve seen some decent Mazda3s, although they seem to have a lot more rust issues than the similar fords. Suzuki’s are not very common from what I’ve seen but an interesting proposition. Thanks
